    Overview

    Oxytocin is a hormone and neuropeptide with roles in childbirth, lactation, social bonding, and pain modulation. Research delivery routes include subcutaneous injection, intranasal spray, and sublingual ODTs.

    Mechanism of Action

    Oxytocin is a neuropeptide implicated in social behavior that also exerts antinociceptive (pain-reducing) effects. Subcutaneous oxytocin has been shown to reduce heat-pain intensity and unpleasantness ratings locally on the injected arm, suggesting a peripheral mechanism in addition to its central actions.

    Dosing Notes

    Studies have used SQ synthetic oxytocin at 4 mcg/2 mL. Intranasal regimens range from single 24-48 IU doses to 24-48 IU daily for two weeks. Sublingual ODTs are commonly 10-100 IU dissolved ~30 minutes before sexual activity.

    Safety Notes

    Oxytocin is excreted in breast milk but is not expected to harm infants. Do not use during pregnancy as oxytocin induces uterine contractions.
