    Overview

    L-carnitine is synthesized in the brain, liver, and kidneys and also obtained from diet. It is considered conditionally essential - under certain conditions (premature birth, kidney dysfunction) demand can exceed endogenous production. It supports fat metabolism, heart and brain function, and muscle activity.

    Mechanism of Action

    L-carnitine transports long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria where they are oxidized to produce ATP. It also helps move toxic compounds out of the mitochondria.

    Dosing Notes

    Oral or IV L-carnitine is effective for L-carnitine deficiency. IV products must be administered by a healthcare provider. Routine administration to end-stage renal disease patients on hemodialysis is not recommended unless treating deficiency.
