    Overview

    Cerebrolysin is a lipid-free neuropeptide preparation produced by standardized enzymatic breakdown of purified porcine brain proteins. It is a complex mixture of low-molecular-weight neuropeptides and free amino acids (all below 10,000 Daltons) that crosses the blood-brain barrier. It contains fragments associated with BDNF, NGF, GDNF, CNTF, and others.

    Mechanism of Action

    Cerebrolysin is a low molecular weight peptide preparation that crosses the blood-brain barrier. It acts as an analogue of endogenous neurotrophic factors, promoting neurogenic and neuroprotective activity. It may interact with adenosine A1 and GABAb receptors and has immunomodulatory effects, reducing microglial activation and LPS-induced interleukin-1β release. In Alzheimer's disease models, it reduces phosphorylation of amyloid precursor protein (APP) by modulating kinase proteins.

    Dosing Notes

    For stroke and TBI: 20-50 mL/day for 10-21 days (stroke) or 7-30 days (TBI). For Alzheimer's and vascular dementia: 10-30 mL/day in cycles of 5 days/week for 4 weeks, 2-4 cycles/year. Morning administration is preferable.
